Fire Alarm Upgrade and Compliance Correction

Identifying hidden risks and bringing a local West Midlands business system back to standard.

The Background

A local business in the West Midlands contacted us after finding our company through Google. They already had a well-known national company maintaining their fire alarm system; however, following a recent fire risk assessment, they were advised that improvements were required.

Their existing detectors had reached the end of their 10-year life cycle, and the shop floor was identified as having insufficient fire detection coverage.

Project Requirements

  • Replace ageing heat and smoke detectors
  • Increase detection coverage on the shop floor
  • Ensure compliance with fire risk assessment recommendations
  • Prepare the system for an upcoming insurance audit

A Proactive & Thorough Approach

What started as a standard upgrade quickly became a critical intervention.

We attended the site to assess the system and provided a clear quotation for the replacement and installation of additional detectors. The client was happy with the proposal, and the works were scheduled and completed efficiently.

During these works, we identified a number of defects within the existing system. These were documented and quoted for, and the client approved the additional remedial works to ensure everything was functioning correctly.

The Critical Discovery

As part of carrying out these remedial works, we undertook a full inspection of the system. It was during this process that we uncovered a critical issue: the existing control panel was not compatible with a number of the installed detection devices.

To work around this, the system had previously been incorrectly wired—something that is not acceptable within fire safety systems and could severely compromise reliability and compliance. We highlighted this issue immediately on a Friday, explaining the risks involved. The client acted quickly, and a new, fully compatible control panel was installed the following Monday to rectify the issue without delay.

The Correct Solution & Results

To resolve the issue properly, we installed a new, compatible control panel that allowed all devices to be connected correctly and operate as intended. This ensured the entire system was brought back in line with current standards, with all components working together safely and reliably.

The system was fully tested, commissioned, and certified, with all relevant documentation issued in preparation for the client's insurance audit.

Why This Matters for Businesses

Even where systems are regularly maintained, underlying issues can sometimes go unnoticed, particularly where multiple upgrades or changes have been made over time.

  • Ensure systems operate as intended in an emergency
  • Maintain compliance with current standards
  • Satisfy risk assessment & insurance requirements
  • Protect both people and property
